It’s the time we’ve all been waiting for. A new year to start over and leave all our problems and worries behind in 2017. To finally do what we’ve been telling ourselves we would do but never did. “New year, new me,” right?
We all know that the change of a single digit in the year doesn’t change our habits or lifestyle. But we understand that it is symbolic. So here are some tips on keeping yourself in check with your new goals that you’ve set for yourself or goals and habits from 2017 that have rolled over. Just remember that you don’t need to wait for the new year to change or start something. 🙂
Get a planner or utilize an electronic calendar.
Everyone loves a new, aesthetic planner to break in. Find one that reflects your personality and use it to keep track of your deadlines. Writing it down in a planner/calendar can give you a better visual of how much time you have before you should reach a goal! Planner not your style? Google calendar works just as well.
Tell someone you trust about your goals.
If they’re your best friend, you know they will keep in you check. So don’t be afraid to share your dreams and goals with someone you trust! They’ll check in on how you’re doing and a little encouragement goes a long way.
Write it down / make a list.
As young adults, we have a lot on our plates. And let’s be honest, we’ve probably forgotten a thing or two here and there. So write it down! Either in your planner or a memo in your phone. That way, you can easily refer back to it when you want to remind yourself of what you wanted to accomplish tomorrow, this week, etc!
Focus and minimize any distractions.
In a world filled with notifications popping up on our phones almost constantly and Netflix being just a click away — it’s easy to get distracted. Set aside some time dedicated to what you were going to do and turn off that phone. Just write, practice your instrument, whatever it is — minimize any distractions possible.
Reward yourself to stay motivated.
Congrats! You’ve hit your goal, or a milestone towards your long-term goal. Your effort and hard work should be recognized — treat yo self! The harder or longer it takes to achieve the goal, the bigger the reward should be!
Manage your time wisely.
Managing your time can allow you to focus on what’s most important to you. Think about it — a lot can be accomplished if you prioritize what you need to do and dedicate your time towards your goals! Make the most of your time by waking up early and getting your day started. Or better yet, utilize your weekends! In order to play hard, you gotta work hard.
Keep track of the progress you make.
Every week or so, take time to reflect on your goals and what you’ve done that week to achieve it. Adjust your actions or thinking process if you need to! It can help to to put things in perspective if you see how much you’ve accomplished so far — whether it’s something big or small.
“Oh, I’ll do it tomorrow.” Nah, fam. Do it now. Do it today! Set yourself up for success by accomplishing something a little every day. Baby steps. If not now, when?
Hold yourself accountable.
In the end, it’s ultimately up to you to hold yourself accountable for your goals. You can decide to eat healthy and exercise, you can decide to buy that new cute shirt you like, you have the option of deciding what you do and do not do. Keep yourself in check!
We would like to wish you all the best in achieving your goals or maintaining good habits this year in 2018! Make sure to set those goals, make the most of your year, and just do it. Push yourself, step out of your comfort zone, and you will be amazed at what you can do. And always remember that whatever it is that you decide to do, do it “with meraki!” 😉
